Leased owner-operators are covered by the motor carrier's liability policy while they're under dispatch. Non-trucking liability fills the gap when you're driving your truck for anything else — heading home after a load, going to the shop, or personal use.
NTL vs. bobtail
- Non-trucking liability covers you whenever you're not operating under dispatch for the carrier, with or without a trailer.
- Bobtail traditionally covers driving the tractor without a trailer — and depending on the policy, may apply even while under dispatch.
- Your lease agreement usually tells you which one the carrier requires. Ask for the requirement in writing before buying.

Do I need NTL if I have my own authority?
No. If you run under your own authority, your primary auto liability policy covers you at all times; NTL is for leased-on drivers.
