Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum insurance for an MC number?

For for-hire general freight in vehicles of 10,001 lbs or more, $750,000. Vehicles under 10,001 lbs need $300,000. Oil and most hazmat need $1,000,000, and the most dangerous hazmat needs $5,000,000.

Why do brokers require $1 million if the law says $750,000?

Brokers and shippers set their own carrier requirements to protect themselves. In practice, $1,000,000 auto liability and $100,000 cargo is the standard for most freight.

Do private carriers need to file insurance with FMCSA?

Private carriers of non-hazardous property don't file insurance with FMCSA, but private carriers of hazardous materials must meet the federal minimums.
