The MCS-90 is a federal endorsement attached to the auto liability policy of interstate for-hire motor carriers (and certain hazmat carriers). It guarantees that the public can collect up to the federally required amount after a crash — even if the policy wouldn't otherwise cover the claim.
What it means for you
- It protects injured members of the public, not the trucking company.
- If the insurer pays a claim only because of the MCS-90 (for example, an unlisted vehicle or excluded driver), the carrier must reimburse the insurer.
- It doesn't add coverage for your own losses, cargo, or physical damage.
- Passenger carriers have a parallel endorsement, the MCS-90B.

Does the MCS-90 mean I'm covered for any driver?
No. It means the public can collect, but your insurer can then seek reimbursement from you if the driver or vehicle wasn't covered under the policy terms. Always list every driver and unit.
