Sprinter and cargo vans are popular for expedited freight, medical courier work and last-mile delivery. Because most cargo vans are rated under 10,001 lbs GVWR, the federal rules are lighter than for trucks — but for-hire interstate work still needs authority and an insurance filing.
Federal requirements for small vehicles
For-hire carriers of general freight in vehicles under 10,001 lbs GVWR must file at least $300,000 in liability to keep their operating authority active. In practice, load boards and expedite carriers commonly require $1,000,000 auto liability and $100,000 cargo, just like larger trucks.
Common cargo van coverages
- Commercial auto liability (filed with FMCSA if you hold your own authority).
- Cargo coverage for the freight you carry.
- Physical damage on the van.
- Hired & non-owned auto if you rent vans during peak season.

Can I use personal auto insurance for delivery or expedite work?
Generally no — personal policies exclude vehicles used to carry goods for a fee. Some delivery-app programs provide limited coverage while you're on an active delivery, but for expedite or your own delivery business you need commercial auto.
